A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
