Three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" knee injury when the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 to the Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself late in the first half during an inadvertent contact with teammate Jones.

The other player came down on the footwear of the MVP, and he immediately collapsed to the floor clutching his knee.

The 30-year-old, that leads the league this season in rebounds and assists, recorded a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the contest prior to incurring the problem.

Jokic will undergo an MRI on Tuesday to evaluate the extent of the injury.

"Right away, he realized something was wrong," commented Denver coach Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone who suffers an injury, that's tough to see, particularly somebody as special as Jokic. We will know more tomorrow."

"The team will adjust together. Of course, currently, I am focused primarily about him as a person and the frustration of facing an event of that nature."
