Three Lions Coach Explains His Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
In the past, the England assistant coach competed for Accrington Stanley. Now, he is focused on helping the head coach win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. The road from the pitch to the sidelines started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He had found his purpose.
Metoric Climb
The coach's journey stands out. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a name with creative training and excellent people skills. His club career included elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include big names such as top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the peak according to him.
“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”
Obsession with Details
Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies involve player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and rejects terms including "pause".
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Driven Leaders
He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. We must not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and innovate. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We have 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to know-how to performance.
“To develop a process for effective use in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections with each player. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we need to watch them play, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”
World Cup Qualifiers
Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. The team has secured qualification by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.
“The manager and I agree that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good about the Premier League,” he comments. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the physicality, the honesty. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.
“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They understand tactics – structured defenses. We are really trying to speed up play through midfield.”
Drive for Growth
The coach's thirst for development is all-consuming. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried over the speaking requirement, since his group included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he entered difficult settings available to him to hone his presentations. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees during an exercise.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those convinced and he recruited the coach to his team with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the team dismissed most of his staff but not Barry.
The next manager at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he brought Barry over from Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
