Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to the hot corner.

In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that drove in teammates for a dramatic one-run win. The next night in the title match against the United States, he blasted a equalizing homer in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a press conference on the coming Monday.
