Israelis have assembled around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the plan.

A prominent representative familiar with the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the agreement.

He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to produce any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are striving to reduce the differences between the both parties.

Key Matters in Talks

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war management of the region

Public Reaction

In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home anymore and until each abducted person return none of us will be secure."

"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the families of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Protester Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the captives to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the music event, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"As the evening arrives, the dread comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.

"We are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."

Health Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had taken in the corpses of several people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis reported two more victims had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medics said.
