The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
