The Japanese Economic Output Contracts as Overseas Sales Are Hit by American Trade Duties
The Japanese economic system has experienced a drop for the initial time in a year and a half, primarily caused by weakening exports due to newly imposed American tariffs.
Group of Seven Growth Leaderboard
The Japanese economy stands as the initial Group of Seven economy to disclose an output shrinkage in the previous quarter.
With the United States yet to publish its gross domestic product data for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven economic leaderboard show:
- France: 0.5 percent expansion
- United Kingdom: +0.1%
- Canada: +0.1% (preliminary figure)
- Germany: 0%
- Italian economy: no growth
- Japan: -0.4%
Tourism Shares Decline amid Political Dispute with China
In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is dealing with an escalating diplomatic conflict with China regarding Taiwan.
Stocks in Japanese travel and retail companies have fallen sharply after China advised its residents to avoid visiting to Japan.
This move by Beijing heightened a political dispute that was sparked by comments from Japan's new prime minister about the potential of deploying troops in the event of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The development led to a surge of sell-offs across Japan's leisure shares.
- Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7%
- The department store chain tumbled by 11.3 percent
- The national carrier declined by 3.75 percent
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory advising against travel to Japan introduces near-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making department stores, high-end shopping, and hospitality particularly vulnerable."
GDP Decline Details
Japan's gross domestic product declined by 0.4% in the third quarter, as manufacturers' exports were affected by tariffs imposed by the United States this year.
Exports were a major factor of the contraction, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.
Previously, the American government had threatened Japan with a new 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15% when the two nations concluded a trade deal.
Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8% in the quarter through September.
"The Japanese economic situation was solid in the first half of this year and today's GDP figures showed that momentum is paused temporarily.
I anticipate Japan's economy to be back on a gradual recovery trend going forward."
The US administration has recently recognized the impact of tariffs on US consumers, reducing duties on imported food products including meat, produce, beverages and fruits amid growing concerns about rising costs.
