The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – But It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined initialism surfaced a couple of months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for doctors to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are continuing. Authorities has denied these claims, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is accused of. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on harmony has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
