New York's next mayor states he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his victory in November.
"My choice was based on our family's safety and the need to directing my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.
Political Debate
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his previous Astoria home.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
