New Year's Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snow Predicted Throughout the UK
Weather experts are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Plans Continue Amid Forecasts
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are set to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.
Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are expected to be low, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- People are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.
Temperatures Set to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Advisories Released
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this indicated the weather was likely to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
