Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
