No major competition markets competitive balance in the manner of the NFL: it defines their identity. However, after the first ten matchups during the current schedule, this doesn't represent a landscape with perfect equilibrium among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. The Lions also (six and three), despite their uneven performances in trench play and navigating tension on their coaching staff, have shown they're capable of dominating good teams. For each of these squads, one can readily envision a championship trajectory.

AFC Playoff Chaos

Turning to the American Football Conference, championship race remains completely chaotic. Your four division leaders after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all at 8-2) and Steelers (5-4 record). Consider that carefully. Kansas City isn't there. Buffalo is missing. Today they appear young, fast and unafraid. However, we must acknowledge the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They've encountered the most manageable schedule in the league, and flaws have still emerged. Their quarterback has been sacked on 35 occasions – among the highest totals – and some of the shots he endured during the game were vicious. As the season progresses, those hits add up.

Broncos Situation

The Broncos are 8–2 as well, and the perception remains as if they’re holding their breath. Their quarterback has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, with the defense doing all the heavy lifting. Absent adequate signal-calling, the Broncos won't frighten playoff opponents. The Chargers are also hovering in the AFC West at 7-2, however, health issues along their offensive line will make it tough to achieve championship contention.

Pittsburgh Situation

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, somehow still leading the Northern division despite being thumped a decisive loss to Los Angeles during prime time. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints at this stage of his career persistently appear. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, yet Baltimore, with their QB returning to health and facing easier opponents, have won three consecutive. We shouldn't be completely astonished that the Ravens have narrowed within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within the Steelers' uneven performances. That the Ravens started the season 1-5 and still look like they should win the division is telling about the conference as a whole.

Traditional Powers

Baltimore constitutes part of the Big Three – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who would still strike the most fear among competitors should they reach postseason. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, but the Chiefs and Bills persistently undermine themselves.

Bills Struggles

Last week, Buffalo was celebrating following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered one of the most disappointing losses this year. They didn’t just lose against Miami; they suffered humiliation, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
