French authorities to begin stopping small boats in Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to start intercepting migrant vessels in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police representative says officers will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief change towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the former government official left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for response.
