The UK's boxing star is set to be promoted to world boxing champion after Oleksandr Usyk decided to relinquish his world title

This situation arises after the champion informed the World Boxing Organisation he would avoid a mandatory title defence against Wardley

Boxing Organization's Position

The WBO stated that Usyk chose to vacate his belt after deep reflection"

The Ukrainian maintains the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles, having beaten his British opponent at the national stadium in the summer month to become a double undisputed champion

He first became the all-belt title holder in spring 2024 by defeating the British champion, before relinquishing one championship a month afterwards and opting out of facing the required opponent

Usyk secured the WBO belt in 2021 by overcoming Joshua and went on to protect his title repeatedly

In July, the boxing organization mandated talks for a mandatory defence against temporary title holder Parker, only for a champion's back problem to cause the delay of the bout

But Wardley, captured the temporary championship from Parker with a major surprise in the championship rounds at the capital's venue recently and was ordered to fight the champion before the end of September

The boxing organization hasn't formally announced the title change but his representative believes it is a formality
