Keeper Mary Earps has publicly stated that her recently published personal story was never intended to “criticize individuals” and expressed concern that audience feedback has been “misinterpreted.”

Controversial Comments and Supporters’ Disapproval

The former England goalkeeper, who had a vital part in the championship win, received criticism from followers and Blues coach Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about former team-mate Hannah Hampton and coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her autobiography, Earps reportedly claimed told Wiegman she was “encouraging negative conduct” by bringing Hampton back to the England squad after leaving her out for being “unruly and inconsistent.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps told reporters.

Clarifying Her Purpose

Earps clearly stated that the autobiography was not meant to damage anyone.

• “I’ve not written this book to tear anyone down in any way whatsoever.”
• “That isn’t my personality as a individual.”
• “This is real life. It has implications. It is not entertainment.”

She also commented on how female soccer has moved into an area that has become “almost like performance,” where personal lives are scrutinized heavily for public amusement.

Earps mentioned losing the starting position as the starting goalkeeper before the European Championship and how that created tension with Wiegman.

She stated it was “not a rapid decline” in their connection—just a clash of viewpoints—and she still respects the coach.

“Several incidents that happened in the summer that I hoped had unfolded otherwise,” Earps stated.

Individual Difficulties

In her book, Earps discussed openly the bullying she suffered at school, describing it as a “extremely difficult” chapter to revisit because it brought back previous trauma.

These sentiments led to panic attacks, and Earps disclosed she struggled with physical appearance and turned to alcohol during the lockdown period to cope with anxiety and depression.

Earps recently shared that she is in a relationship with a woman and shared her happiness about her partnership.

She also discussed her wish to have children and revealed she has preserved her eggs for later fertility treatment.

“I would love to be a mum and have a family,” Earps stated. “I love playing football, but I wish to have a child later down the line.”

Earps portrayed the medical treatment as “crazy and invasive” and advocated for more research tailored to athletes undergoing similar procedures.

Throughout the interview, Earps emphasized that she has no regrets about her career or individual actions, stressing that she always behaved honestly.
