Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure said the incident made him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
