California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.
After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is facing water scarcity. This milestone follows challenging years marked by below-average rain that worsened wildfire risks and strained its huge agribusiness.
A Map Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas
A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that the entire state is free from dry or drought conditions. This shift came after a period of heavy precipitation that replenished major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta well above their typical levels.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons
The path to this point involved intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to significant overflow, blackouts, and tragic losses. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, areas like northeastern California were deemed abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 eliminated those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern
But, authorities caution that being out of drought is not the same as complete water security. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.
This mountain snow, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for the year ahead. Water officials have emphasized that it is too early to make predictions for the annual water supply.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, attention turns to maintaining this precious water balance throughout the rest of the year.
