Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
