In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized image promoted by Russian state media that, domestically, it reads as a compliment instead of a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a made-to-measure version of Putin. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a TV series launched last October, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from chaos. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of debunking it. An adaptation based on a popular book sets out to subvert the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is presented as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the shadows, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a selection process with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the country in practice.

• According to an expert who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the image of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not involved with field operations.

Interestingly, the shift to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s debut as 007. The grittier interpretation led local outlets and online audiences to draw visual parallels with their leader. Mashup posters swapping Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the chance to frame his casting as a small victory. The film's omission of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. His influence is signaled through portraits or orders from on high. Now, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it might seek to examine.
